Another year, a fresh slate to work with. Feels nice doesn’t it? I haven’t sat down and made goals as I have in the following post since 2012 and years previous when I was working hard to pay down debt and save. My goals for 2013 and 2014 were much freer. I saved a lot less though so it’s time to set some solid goals again.
So I turn 30 this year. Kind of scary. My life looks quite different from what I had imagined ten years ago, a lot of good, some bad. Just can’t believe I made it here, I’ve done so much and seen so much. I move onward with excitement to see what I can do in the new year.
My projected income is roughly $27,500 net. That gives me roughly $2,250 to budget per month. My savings goals below total $10,333.46, $861.12 per month. That’s 38% of my income.
There are a few changes I want to make in 2015 and I have things to prepare for. My work contract is up for renewal for the start of November. I think I’ve done well and hope to be renewed, but it’s not certain so I want to prepare as best as I can and get that emergency fund maxed to $10k this year. If my house sells I’ll use the money from that to max out my emergency fund first, and spread the rest over my other savings goals. ($5k to vehicle fund. $500 to planned travel. $500 to future travel. All remaining to Future House savings) If my house does sell I’ll still want to contribute the same amount of savings this year to put towards a future house, so regardless I need to save $571.59 per month whether it ends up in my emergency fund or my future house fund. I also need to stop using overdraft, and start living on last periods cheque. I’m constantly overdrawn, interest free, and it just doesn’t feel nice. I need to save towards a future car, I made a small increase to my retirement savings and am continuing to save small amounts for travel… and there’s not much left after that. So here we go, goals!
1. Stop using overdraft, live on last periods pay. Reach by end of February.
2. Save and splurge on a nice new purse in the spring, Michael Kors Dillon?
3. Sell my house.
Take the money and run.
4. Max emergency fund to $10,000. Save $571.59/month. (or: future house)
5. Retirement TFSA/RSP combined* goal +$1,266.38; $4,500
6. Vehicle fund goal 2015 $208
7. Future House 2015 $500
8. Travel expense 2015 $1,500 jan – oct, after that is work depending
9. Last but not least a networth of $72,000. An increase of the amount I plan to save and any small gains in interest/value. 🙂
*I just added a TFSA today with a $100 starting balance, the TFSA and RSP mututal funds I contribute to are both for retirement purposes and the amount covers both accounts.
Due to my work contract uncertainty I haven’t booked or set any lofty travel goals and honestly I really can’t…. I don’t have the income and if I lose income my main priority is being able to live. Responsibility kind of sucks? Haha 😀 So, since no big fancy international trips are in order at least until the end of October, I can plan a few shorter and closer trips, or a last minute trip on the cheap somewhere sunny. I’ve always wanted to visit Cape Breton for example, and I want to go to East to West and back to the Magdalen Islands, I want to go camping and I’d love to go with R. I’ll have to see if he’s up for it if things continue to go well. 🙂

I have struggled maintaining a healthy weight since I started going to college when I was about 17. I’ve never been seriously obese, more like… love-handle and extra jiggle territory. It’s been a topic on my blog before. There seem to be some hereditary factors in my being more prone to becoming overweight (which account for maybe ten pounds orso) but the two primary factors in why I gain weight are first eating more than I should. I was always taught to finish my plate, I am pragmatic and don’t like waste. I tend to overeat because I finish my plate regardless of hunger. I don’t even think about this and it took me a while to realize this. And second, I tend to overeat when I am emotional. Which is bad. I don’t eat unhealthy. but a few extra calories here and there add up faster than you imagine.
I am generally active, I go to the gym averaging a few times a month, my job requires me to be on my feet. I’m not a couch potato. I’ve had a Fitbit Flex since May 2013 and in 2015 I’m going back to tracking my food, in my journal, pen and paper to get a better grip on my eating habits and to make permanent changes so I don’t become my mother. Not a diet, permanent. No food rewards. I want to be fitter, stronger and have more stamina and less jiggles. I want to bike and run and fit my clothes well. I also want to create more routine in my life. I struggle with mornings and keep myself up in the evenings, which means I lose so much daylight by sleeping in and sometimes by the time I’m ready and still energetic enough to go to the gym or go swim… I can’t because it’s closed because my rhythm is screwed up. Time to get more stuff done, efficiency, effective. Bam.
14. Get up at 08:00/08:30 five days per week
15. Lose 30 for 30.
16. Track food and journal exercise daily
17. Go swimming once a week (incl. in gym membership)
18. Complete c25k a second time by April 30, 2015
19. Start weighing in weekly by June 30, 2015.

22. Wear out shoes, don’t buy more, reduce total amount of shoes owed.
