House update – Walls are going up!

As per request I had to post some updates on how the house is coming along! My last post left off here:

After I ordered a truck load of dirt to fill the hole –  now THAT’S a depressing purchase… $130 for DIRT – the concrete and beams went in for the new floor. Shoveling that big pile of dirt was a bit of a pain but we managed! (Because of cost and other considerations this addition was NOT built on a poured concrete foundation but rather on posts & concrete which means that these will eventually need to be replaced, this was a tough choice)

The concrete was set that day and this shows the floor joists going up after the weekend: This is all only within one week (beginning when the original porch was demo’d), it goes incredibly fast when they’re working at it full-time! I wish I could do this stuff myself but I’m also glad I hired this out – even though it’s making me broke.  Here you can see my father and the workers talking. They’re blurred for privacy. (Dad likes to check in on things)

And the walls being framed on Wednesday (Tuesday was spent insulating, taping and building the rest of the floor + supply runs) I’m not sure if it’s the angle of the picture but I can assure you that the walls as they stand now are straight and level. 🙂

And that’s where I leave you for today! There has been more progress so far but it will have to wait for another post. It was really cool to see how big the room is really going to be. At 12×16 I was never quite sure if it was enough for a bedroom with a door to a (future) deck or if it was too much, but after the floor was framed the contractor walked me through and we talked about the door and window locations – he’s such a great guy, he was laying out the options of where to put the bed, what would work best with the light and the most effective use of space. I’m happy we did this, that day I also ended up going to Home Depot and getting a deal on two windows – just about the size I wanted.

Stay tuned for more pics!
