Being in school, working full-time and sort-of renovating on the side makes I have a pretty busy life. The problem is that in fact, I’m not always as busy as I seem and I let things lie around for far too long. For example; I’ve had paint cans sitting at the bottom of the stairs for a full month now and all I have to do is paint the risers and the trim. A job that will take an hour MAX. I didn’t realize this so much at first but by taking a closer look at myself I’m seeing some things I don’t like, so it’s time to ‘kick the habit’. There are a few things I want to address in a series of posts and this is the Kicking Bad Habits, Part 1.

The Bad Habit:

I follow quite a few shows; Mad Men, Dexter, True Blood, Glee, US of Tara, 30 Rock, SNL, Outsourced, Community, HIMYM and the list goes on. Before you think I’m one of those kids raised in front of a TV it’s actually quite the opposite: We either had no TV and if we did we did not have cable. It wasn’t until I was in my teens that we had cable and I did not have my own television until I was an adult.

I am frustrated because I am noticing that I am being sucked in to wasting endless hours glued to a box that contributes nothing to my life, to my wellbeing or to my intelligence, which is what this post is about: Television isn’t something I need, I can very happily be more productive and do without it. There are actually very few things I watch that contribute in a positive way to my life.

As I stated, I’ve never been a person to follow shows regularly and when I met my boyfriend one of the things we liked to do together was watch TV. We’d watch a box set or check a show out on the Internet and he introduced to me quite a few cool programs I really liked. It’s now two and a half years later and I’ve wasted many many hours watching series we both enjoy and gradually we’ve come to each have shows we like and shows we watch together. There isn’t a problem with this per say, we enjoy hanging out together and watching a program on Sunday evening and that’s all fine! The problem is that I now also spend time alone watching shows. I am keeping up with a million of them at a time, making sure I’ve seen the latest episode… and I’ve had enough of it.

Solution:

I’ve stopped following 75% of the shows we used to watch. I didn’t specifically pick out which ones I just decided enough is enough! I want my time back! We still watch Dexter together and I’ll watch some of the funny series, like SNL, when I happen to come across them but but that’s it. I refuse to keep up on every episode of every season of every program out there. I’ve done this for a full month now (this post is a tad delayed) and I can’t say I miss it. When my friends ask have I seen this and this? I say no, I haven’t and we talk about other things instead. I have more time to do stuff, more time to work and I am more productive around the house. It’s great!

Television is fun in moderation but not when it takes over the time I should be spending on other things, another lesson learned I suppose.

PS: Having made my opinion clear on TV I should note that I feel different about computers and Internet. While I also waste many hours on the computer the Internet and computers can be very useful tools and I would not want to do without those. I would simply be less productive without them.
